Let's Talk about Sex baaaaby: Mangina

In another series of short articles, since I am one of the few, the maybe proud, the 'Manginas' (Yes, just like Vagina but with a Man instead of a Vag.) I'm one of those people who play a female toon and am a male IRL. Why? I'm on a roleplaying server, so I like to RP as different sexes and personalities. I was also drawn to the whole Female Blood Elf in Judgement Armor that Blizzard kept showing off everywhere all the dang time (like the one on the loading screen for example.)

Anyhow, I ask this question today, well, two actually:

- How many of you play characters of the opposite sex and why?

- What is the term for a female who plays as a male?

My answer for #2 has been decided upon as "Womisticle"/"Womasticle", however I have heard "Fenis"/"Wonis"/"Wenis".

My main character, Joyd the paladin, is a Dwarf. 'Cause dwarves rock. Needless to say, he is male. My primary alt, Eyzedti the druid, is a Night Elf female.
I hardly see why anyone makes a deal over playing characters that are of the opposite sex; sure, I'm not a woman, but I'm also not a dwarf or an elf. I suppose on a role-playing server, where you have to try to get into the head of the character somewhat, it might be a bigger deal, but I've role-played female characters (not in WoW) before and it's not like it's a big deal. I suspect that the most typical reason is the reason that some of my low-level alts are female; when I created them, I wanted to try out something different; making them a different sex than my main was one way to make them distinct.
One thing I have noticed is that most females play female characters, while guys tend to play a mix. (Although most guys, especially those new to MMOs, tend to make their first character male.) For what it's worth, in the order I created them, my characters are a Male Dwarf (Joyd), a Male Orc (Tanglemane), a Female Troll (Zilka), another Male Dwarf (Marquee), a Male Night Elf (Eyeffkai), a Female Night Elf (Eyzedti), yet another Male Dwarf (Railioc), a Female Draenai (Yarlie), and a Male Draenai (Abenjimmy). (Many of them did not make it past level 10 and are gone now; both Draenai serve, as of right now at least, primarily as bank characters, with the female being a Fish Bank, sending out fish to guildies who need to level cooking, and the Male holding the guild supply of Darkmoon Special Reserve. Not my idea.)

I play a female toon, even though I'm male, and I always will. The reason? This:

I'm going to have look at this thing for 70+ hours, It might as well look good.

I'm male; although my highest-level character (a 51 Tauren hunter) is male, the majority of my characters in World of Warcraft are female. There are a couple of reasons for this - foremost the reason that Rune points out above, that if my /played is going to be measured in days, I should be looking at something I enjoy looking at - but I also feel like many of the male models in World of Warcraft are overly bulky and awkward, and for whatever reason I have a much easier time identifying with female avatars, especially in World of Warcraft.

Back to the topic at hand - I really don't like "mangina" or any of the proposed terms for females playing male characters, but I can't think of any good alternatives. Then again, I don't really think we need terms for these tropes, so take that as you will.

I think it mostly goes the other way around. I don't have any interest in playing a male toon because I want to feel somehow connected to my characters.

But it does get confusing in my guild if I should call the person a "he" or a "she" if they play a female toon yet I know they are male IRL. :)

LOL @ Womasticle.

I like your blog in general, just wanted to drop by and say hi. I play 0 male toons based on their walking/casting animations mostly.

I usually refer to people in terms of what sex their character is, usually, it kind of depends for the he/she thing. I think the terms aren't the best or nicest, but it's a term that's been floating around on WoW and probably other MMO's for a long time now.

Amuzing topic!!

Me personally as a male, i only play male characters in WoW. I only have a few alts aside from my main. All are male and all are BloodElf's. I've never tried a female character and never really had a inclination to play one. I do find it amuzing the amount of female characters that are male though.

@Galoheart, isn't playing a male blood elf more feminine than playing a female blood elf though? /tease

1. Agreed on the female blood elf in judgement armor being shown off thing. Wayyy too hot to pass on. However, the BE animations are horrible. The male ones are already pretty bad, but the female ones are like...whaaa??!

2. If you're going Night Elf, go female, please, go female.

Essentially it comes down to something Zalgradis said in his 3rd movie "if you're going to be staring at an ass for hours upon hours, would it rather be hot ass or mancleavage?"

(apparently chicks get a lot of free stuff too. My gf's mage got something like 120g by level 39 from guys hitting on her)

As much as I'd hate to admit it, just yesterday someone gave my druid (a female character) some level fifty or so druid blue items, while my main character, a male dwarf, has never received anything for no reason, and I've spent way more time on him.

I rolled a female dark elf rogue in EverQuest and played her to 60 before I couldn't bear it anymore. Like the above posters, I just wanted a change from the male dark elf and male iksar (lizardman) avatars I had been playing up to that point.

I will admit I did feel "dirty" playing her because it felt like a misrepresentation, even though no one on the Internet really knows who you are. I have never again rolled a female avatar, but I wouldn't knock those who do, simply because, as they say, 'different strokes for different folks.'

I can't bring myself to play a female character. I cannot seem to connect with a female character and it just feels wrong and I delete it. Names are also very important to me and I hate seeing stuff like "rogueman" or other such "creative" names.

Anyways... I pretty much only play male dwarves. They are gruff and stalky and embody what I want in a character. I do have a 60 gnome lock but I don't intend to level him anymore. I'm a very "roleplaying" type of person and I tend to stick with an idea of how I want to play a certain character.

Just a random update from my guild chat 2 days ago:

Hunter: Hmm, what should I make my Mage? If I plan to PVP, Gnome or Draenei?
Hunter: Escape Artist or Big Rack and Junk in the Trunk?
Hunter: BRB.
(LVL1 Draenei Mage has joined the guild.)

Draenei chicks are awesome, they're like night elves but with crazy hooves and such, I think they look awesome as Mages.
