The Girlfriend Chronicles: Introduction
I was over on WoWInsider and read an article about getting your female significant other to play WoW. I've decided to document the steps and progress I'm making in converting her to the unholy cult of MMO addicts. At best, I'd like to enjoy playing the game with her, however, I'm not being nefarious enough to make her roll a healing class to be my personal healbot, so I can spec Retribution, haha. However, females do tend to enjoy healing classes... perhaps it's that 'nurturing/motherly' part of their brain that reinforces this? Hmm... separate topic for another time I suppose.
Here's a brief outline of the steps I have so far taken and other additional information:
Here's a brief outline of the steps I have so far taken and other additional information:
- The girlfriend indeed thinks that WoW is a stupid game, however, she completely understands why I play it (in fact she encourages me to get my money's worth).
- She hangs out with my WoW friends IRL (People I met via my server), there is a monthly or bi-monthly get together at Dave & Busters, and she tags along and has fun.
- She is a huge fan of RPGs, in fact, I've been watching/helping her out with Suikoden 1 - 3 as of late. On a side-note, her favorite RPG is Final Fantasy 6.
- I've had 'the talk', where I explained to her how much I'd love it if she'd play WoW, and how much it would mean to me, etc. etc. (I meant this in all seriousness as well).
- The deal was, after getting her an account (I bought an old account off someone for like 10 bucks at my College a year or so ago), that she needed a PC to play. Well, I recently just got her said PC, and it's capable of playing WoW, despite her crappy wireless internet connection.
- We watched the Burning Crusade collector's edition DVD, and she expressed interest in being a Blood Elf (She doesn't have the xPac yet, I'd prefer if she got hooked first then got it).
- I play on a roleplaying server, and she played D&D as a kid, I can only hope that this will be a nice hook for her as well, however, it's more of a normal server with an RP tag on it more than anything else.
- She fiddled around with an undead mage & gnome warlock for a handful of levels (maybe 6), but, that was all solo content.
- She plays the Trading Card Game with me, and she enjoys it for the most part. Fingers crossed that the connections between the TCG & MMO will make good transactions (IE. Important NPCs & Item names that she'll remember and say "Oh! I know that item/person from the card game! Neat!")
- The account, since I had it for a year prior to her playing, is FILLED with alts/banks. I need to clean up shop big time in order to make these alts playable or deletable for her, most are level 1s.
- I need to clear out a bank alt on my personal account in order to have a level 1 character to group with her, so she can have the co-op experience with me.
- We need to make time in her busy schedule during the weekend (She doesn't live with me), to bring her computer down and hook it up. This only seems doable during the weekends, in which she's been busy for the past 2 weeks or so.
- Keeping her interested, she gets bored relatively easily, however with Suikoden games, she has recently been playing for 6-8 hours at a time. I think it's because I'm there playing it/watching it/enjoying it with her, and therefore it makes it more fun and less lonesome.
- Convince her that dying is okay, and not to be frustrated, it's very easy for her to just get up and quit. I believe by playing co-op I can pick up the slack or make wiping 'fun' for her, and show her that it's no big deal and we can laugh about it or whatever.

It sounds like she is ready! If she plays the TCG with you already that is awesome! I bought a set each for myself and husband and have yet to get him to try it so we can learn together. Ha!
I think the big hurdle as when any boyfriend is teaching a girlfriend anything is to help keep them from getting frustated and not expect them to learn it all at once.
Goodluck!
I know this was made a couple days ago, but I just stumbled on your blog tonight, figured I'd comment on it anyway...
I started to play because of a boyfriend as well, and I was one of those girls that completely thought gaming (and anything related to gaming) was utterly ridiculous. I played out of boredom, and clearly came to love the game - she has so many related interests, I'm sure she'll love it too! Plus you play, and having someone to keep you company always makes it more enjoyable.
Good luck with it!
Good luck with the project. Looking forward to hear more about it!
I have a wife that thinks computer games are stupid. Period. For me it's more aggro managment from the wife-mob =)
